The standard “Terms and Definitions shared by the Risk Assessment Standards for Nuclear Facilities: 2018” has been established and issued by the Atomic Energy Society of Japan (AESJ) through the discussion at the Risk Assessment Technical Committee and the Standards Committee and describes the “technical terms and definitions, and abbreviations” for several risk assessment standards issued by the Standards Committee.
The standards issued by the Standards Committee include a chapter that specifies “technical terms and definitions, and abbreviations”. Some of the terms are listed in more than one standard redundantly. The definitions in those are subtly different from each other because they are respectively revised in conformity to individual usage in the standard. The usage of the technical terms may be slightly different and be updated to be most appropriate for periods of the standard published.
When we develop a new standard, the “technical terms and definitions, and abbreviations” listed in the previously published standards are investigated. Even if a technical terms and definitions appear in the above cited standards, they appear in duplicate in some situations to enhance usability of users. In that case, the definition in more than one standard should be consistent with each other.
From the perspective of standard users, the present situation raises a few problems. First, different definitions in the standard terminology might cause confusions to users. Secondly, it is difficult to identify the technical terms which are used in special meaning in the standard only.
Accordingly, the Standards Committee has decided to develop a standard for common terminology, “technical terms and definitions, and abbreviations” for several risk assessment standards issued by the Standards Committee. In former version of this standard, the scope was limited to the terms used in the Standards developed by the Risk Assessment Technical Committee, but in this version of the standard, the scope has been expand to cover various risk assessment standards issued by the Standards Committee of AESJ, because standards developed by the System Safety Technical Committee also quote the Definitions and Terms in this standard.
